Hey all! A little switcheroo.... A friend of mine, Katie, runs the Grant Park Farmer's Market here in Atlanta and she asked me if I'd like to have a tent one weekend. Well, spur of the moment, we set up last Sunday and loved it so much we're gonna give it a go this Sunday also. November 13 from 9:30a.m. - 1:30p.m.

It is a great market. If you like dogs, you'll love it. If you like kids, you'll love it. If you have either or both, bring 'em. Let's just say in the 4 hours we were there I took well over 500 photos of doggies from which I will do paintings for my galleries. Granted, some were blurry and a number of them captured the end of the dog I didn't want to paint - but it was so fun. Everybody is happy and laid back and the goodies are great.

This Sunday, Fran and I plan to take lots of little paintings and examples of our commissioned pet portraits. Mostly, we'll have things at a Farmer's Market price point like the holiday card I made (above). It's a hand-pulled linoleum block print.

And it will be a gorgeous day to boot! Hope to see you.

Atlanta Arts Festival

We are so fortunate in Atlanta to have arts and craft festivals almost year round. I don't go to as many as I used to but I miss so much when I don't. I plan to attend this one tomorrow morning! Piedmont Park is beautiful, the weather is gorgeous - should be great for Atlanta Arts Festival. My friend, Margaret Taylor, will be there with her handmade, reclaimed wood furniture and home decor.

Hello art lovers! I am finally trying to get back into the merging my blog updates with my daily art making routine.

Of late, I have gotten and new, big studio space not far from the house. It has given me some freedoms and a new environment for my muses. It is a grand place and you're welcome to come by anytime M-F 10-6. I will not always be there but it will be open and you are welcome to poke around. I am in a building that is mainly used for showing the work of Dryads Dancing. The work is functional items from picture frames to dining room tables made of reclaimed wood from barns and houses. The stuff is awesome.

And I have been busy painting and making some sculpture. It has been invigorating to work in 3 dimensions, not to mentions beat on things with a hammer and such.

So the result of my first foray into assemblage in years is Jubilee. Let me know what you think. He is available for sale at Hanover Gallery in Chattanooga.

And here's another bit of great news. I have been asked to join Catherine Kelleghan Gallery here in Atlanta. I am very excited about this new opportunity to show my work to a new set of clients and Catherine is great to work with.

This new piece will be in the show at Pryor Fine Art this Friday, September 17th.
Quick art lesson - abstract painting is taking a subject and taking liberties with it, reshape the image, change colors, contours anything that keeps it from being a representational piece (for instance: photorealism). Non-objective work begins with no real object in mind - instead just a feeling and a playing back and forth with balance, color, shapes and so on, keeping the painting from looking like any object or subject entirely. It is at once freeing and difficult. There is talent in keeping the marks interesting and creating a composition with harmony and balance.
Here is my first non-objective piece I've done in a while. Tell me what you think. Parts of this ended up looking like Matisse's interior pieces such as:

The Conversation. This is a painting of Matisse and his wife having an argument. One clue is that the wrought iron on the balcony spells out the french word "Non" meaning "No". One doesn't notice it right away. This piece is an abstract painting in that the room seems so flat, the chair she's in doesn't seem to have any volume to it and the scene out the window is tipped upward toward the viewer. In realism, the land should recede and become lighter and less intense in color.

Wow, I just spilled on that one, huh? What do you think the similarities are between my painting and Matisse's.

I just had to put a picture in...these are my babies Gracie (closest) and Trixie. They are being very good guarding the front yard and garden! And yes, Gracie has one blue eye and one brown. Anyway....

I have been accepted to Pryor Fine Art here in Atlanta. This is a very prestigious gallery in the Buckhead area and they will be handling my larger pieces in Atlanta. This Friday night, Pryor Fine Art is having a major show celebrating 20 years in the business. Their gallery now includes a space below the one they have had for years so there will be tons of art to enjoy. Six of my latest pieces that you've seen here on my blog will be included! I am grateful for this opportunity.

Also, I have taken the other new pieces up to Hanover Gallery which represents me in Chattanooga. Missy Peirano has incredible energy and ties to everything that happens in that town. And the gallery is in a great part of town (Northshore) that overlooks the river. Lots of walking and shopping and communing with nature near Coolidge Park.

Sometimes to appraise a painting I'm working on, I put it on the computer and crop out the studio in the background. That way I can focus on the work with out distraction. So...this painting has already changed from this look. Still playing with it. I hope to put another post up today.

Here's another large abstracted one. This is so freeing. I used to only paint abstract work, all made up in my head. Then I took a plein air class and took to painting outside and looking at everything - painting what I saw. That transition is easy. Going back to abstracted work after being away so long is actually harder. But like riding a bike it is all coming back to me.

This is of the shoreline on the Greater Satilla River in south Georgia. The Satilla is steeped in tannins from the cypress trees there. It looks like very strong tea - a little disconcerting at first. And the first fish I pull up is not a trout but a gar. I thought it was prehistoric - not seen byy modern man ever and when my heart stopped pounding I was gonna make the cover of Time magazine for having found one. See below.

This is another medium sized piece. I painted this along the Chattahoochee one summer. Can't you just see the banks all tangled with beautiful green growth. Nearby, a man was throwing a stick into the middle of the river for his black lab to retrieve. I love how paintings can bring back such specific memories.

I know this is supposed to be a painting blog. I try to paint often - it is my job - my source of income. But being a daughter has trumped everything else.

It hasn't been a year since I had my mother's caregiver arrested in the driveway. Since that time my father's health went on the decline without explanation. I took him and Mom to the hospital to have tests run - to have a plan of action to improve their health. While there, Dad seemed to have given up completely and Monday night my brother and I discontinued all treatment and let him go. It was mercifully quick and what he said he always wanted if the situation presented itself.

Now we are working to find a facility to take care of Mom. Just like when the felon took my parents for all that money, this all has been seat of the pants stuff. Touring "skilled facilities", dealing with funeral homes and talking to scores of doctors about Dad on the hospital's first floor and Mom on the 4th floor. Today we'll be taking Mom to her new "home". There is so much to know about this and no time to pour over volumes of self help books. The best aids we've had were the Elder Law Attorneys we hired when the fraud went down and the 100+ page booklet the funeral home gave us.

I tell you all this because there may very well be a time when each of us has to face this. I hope to save some from all the crazy running around we've had to do. Feel free to contact me if you want benefit of my experience. I would be happy to help anyone - I mean it.

Thank you for subscribing to my blog (I hope you won't give up on me and my painting)...and for the opportunity to vent. My hope is to post paintings very soon. I haven't painted in a month and have no income coming in. What's more I have been chosen for Federal Jury Duty starting Tuesday - 2 weeks more of no painting. But I guess I'll use the jury time to catch up on sleep : )

Hey all. I've gone on a trip that I planned a year ago. A bunch of us are staying in a beach house in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Today there are storms and wind gusts up to 30mph. Still I painted from the covered deck. But the easel kept shaking and the wind would make my brush not land where I planned. The detail isn't nearly as exacting as I wanted. Since I miss painting so much, I persevered, and will likely go out again. So good to go back to painting!

By the way, thanks so much for your words of encouragement. I go back to all that stuff on Thursday. Gotta enjoy the here and now.

Life again

Sorry everyone.
I have been consumed with trying to get my parents back to good health. It is incredible how infuriating it is to deal with health care and add to it the confines of Medicare.
I have been learning a lot this past year. I had the felon arrested on June 30th and have been learning a lot about the court system. Now it is Medicare and caregivers. Wow. There is a mint to be made if anyone can find a way to teach the ins and outs of this health thing. Problem is, when it comes up, it comes up fast! And you get so worn out from the day to day that you can't think. And the whole thing is money driven - surprise, surprise. Meanwhile, I'm not making any money because I can't be around to paint.
I know I don't have it bad, I'm lucky I can take off and drive up and put out fires. A dear friend is taking care of both her parents 24/7.But for me, it didn't have to be this hard! Here are some important points I can take from all this thus far.
1) If you suspect anyone, even a family member, is taking advantage of someone in their charge - do something! You're not going to get your things back - ever! Ask forgiveness if you wrongly accuse someone.
2) Use the 40/70 rule. If you're 40 or your parents are 70, have talks about legal papers, wills, options to take for health assistance, etc. There won't be time to discuss it when the need arises.

There - had to get that out. Thanks. I hope everyone is doing well and please know that I will be posting every chance I get! I really love blogging and can't wait to get back to a routine. I hope you won't give up on me.

There is a spot on I-75 coming back to Atlanta from Macon where I love to look over. I don't think I've ever failed to do it. There is this one break in the trees and the field seems to go on forever. This is it in the late afternoon sun. that's the guardrail in the foreground.

My good friend Nick Orban has been doing these for a while now. This is my first ACEO but I rather enjoyed it. I've been down with the flu or something and so very small paintings are about all I'm up to right now.
This is done from a photo I took around the time of the '96 Olympics. Can't you just feel the Atlanta humidity? The buildings are not really that far away, it is just the haze.

Well, I wanted to loosen up and I think I have. I wonder if you'd know what this was without the title. Not that it would matter. I want to like the juiciness of the paint, the movement, the brushwork. Still...my point that I wanted to make is that in order to loosen up a little, I think it will be easier to loosen up a lot and then ratchet back to a point I can be ok with.
This is a ramp leading down to the beach in Kiawah. It was sunset and January - the light and colors there are wonderful in the winter!

So here's another painting I've done from an old photo I found in a thrift store. (see the reference photo below) I am trying after all these years to loosen up my painting style...back beyond how loose I was long ago. I am told by some very well respected artists that it is very difficult to do after having spent so much time doing pretty representational work. I am inclined to agree - fervently : ). But I am all about hitting my head against a brick wall. That is probably what I am best known for.

I liked how awkward the woman in the sweater looked walking through the parking lot. She really seemed out of her element. The other woman, by contrast, was quite used to waiting for the bus right there - or so it seemed to me.
In addition to having to attend 2 funerals since Christmas, I've also had the flu. Thought 2009 was gonna be fine?

He's so cute! The goats I've been painting have moved so I have to find some more somewhere. This little guy was all wobbly and innocent - I wanted to take him home which might have been a good idea since we have a kudzu problem. We have a problem because our neighbors ignore their kudzu. Don't get me started.

I'm having fun loosening up these days. I feel great with the new year. Funny how one day, just a Thursday can change my whole outlook on things. Oh yeah, I am going to make a lot of these daily paintings bigger. This one is 8 x 10!

Hey everyone! Sorry I don't have a painting to post today (or for the last little while). I have been busy gearing up for this show. I've participated in this group show for years now and I wanted to take this opportunity to tell all of you about it. We are a group of artists chosen to show together because of our professionalism and because each of us works in a very different way. For instance, there will be another painter there with me but she does Chinese Brush Painting. There will be 2 jewelers with very different styles...etc. You get my drift. It is a great place to look for gifts and something for yourself.

At least I suppose she's a grandmother. I love going to antique stores and finding old photos. I've used a lot in my non-painting work and now I am beginning to play with them in paintings. I want to keep the looseness and wacked out colors of the farm animal pieces in more and more of my work.
I have just finished this 48 x 48 commission (see below) and so now I am freed up to paint what strikes me. I still have a local show coming up...The Intown Artists' Show and Sale. It will be the first weekend in December and will have my unsold blog pieces in it as well as some other stuff I've created of late. The great thing for you is that the pieces will be inexpensive since they are small. I've already sold many as gifts. Original art for a song. I love that.
I will be showing with 9 other fine artists. We do this show every year (though I was absent last year). It is a great opportunity to see many artists from different mediums together for one long weekend. See my web site for more info...I'll add details soon.

So, here I am again. The world keeps marching on as I seem mired in the court process convicting "the felon". Time waits for no one. It is the busiest time of the year for me, lots of shows and openings and commissions.

I really love, love, love this one. I really feel that I am getting back to the loose and free painting I have missed.
The title, well, this rooster's expression reminds me of the character (The Continental) Christopher Walken plays on SNL - the debonair yet extremely desperate lover wannabe. There are clips on youtube if you're not familiar.

For those of you keeping up, another court date is tomorrow for the felon.

I'm getting restless. I've always painted fairly quickly but I have slowed considerable when doing the previous daily paintings. This particular piece is more how I like to paint. I feel a lot more comfortable with the broad strokes and the variety of colors (wait until you see tomorrow's post).
The paintings I did in the 1990's were very colorful and fanciful. They were mostly interiors that I made up in my head. And they sold very well. Then, when I started painting en plein air, my work became more realist and I was really enjoying what I was learning. Now I've reached a point where I want to combine both disciplines.
Tell me if you like this new work. That's part of the purpose of this blog - feedback.

I swear I am trying to get back on the horse. Fall is the busiest time for me. I've got 3 shows between now and the end of the year. Good for me, not as good for my blog.

The Post Office seems to have mislaid one of my paintings I shipped to a buyer. So here is the redo. But before I could pack it to ship, my buyer emailed me thanking me for the new one. Well, I hadn't sent the new one; she got the original...the post office only took 29 days to travel what I can drive in 2 hours. Perhaps I should have walked up there. Crazy!

I miss you guys. My subscribers are so supportive and I don't get to hear from them unless I post. Look forward to hearing from you again.

Uggh! I have been encouraged to keep painting flowers and so I bought some lilies yesterday. No biggie, they are fairly simple shapes, right? Had to wipe down two. Hate that. Oh well. Hope you like this one instead.

I was encouraged by the response to last night's post so I bought some lilies tonight. I am going to paint with my friend (and one of the 7) Millie Gosch. She and I will work on still lifes. It is so nice to be able to paint with people on occasion. And I'll be in her studio, seems like I never get out of mine. The show for "The 7" is at Frameworks Gallery this year on November 6th. Mark the date.

I really like the atmosphere in this painting. I also have to do larger paintings to stay comfortable. The smaller size is a good challenge and economical, but some subjects make me want to break out the bigger guns. For instance, I have a great deal of trouble painting flowers so small. But then I always got a "needs improvement" check mark on my report cards when it came to "staying in the lines".

I painted these from life up in the mountains of North Carolina, Highlands to be exact. A bunch of us painter types went up there for a weekend and when it rained we painted these beautiful flowers just cut from the garden.

Hey all, hope you haven't given up on me. I've got to quit making promises about getting all these paintings done for the sole reason that every time I do, something huge and distracting happens to me.
Still trying to get the parent's affairs back in order. It is maddening how hard it is for an honest person to try to straighten out what a dishonest person had no problem undoing. Why didn't she have to jump through any hoops to steal from my folks? I've got present all sorts of paperwork to close accounts that she opened all over the place.

Anyway, if mine can be a cautionary tale, then its worth it. If you suspect anyone of taking advantage of your folks, don't delay in checking it out. It happens so much. I haven't talked to anyone who didn't have one of these stories to tell. Better to be embarrassed about being wrong than to have to wade through this stuff.

I did this painting in Darien, Georgia with my friend Millie Gosch. I will be wistful if this one sells but that's ok, I hope someone likes it just as much as I do.
